Trip map

This pilgrimage involves a moderate amount of physical activity including walking for a mile or more, climbing stairs, and hiking over rocky and uneven ground.

DAY 1, Thursday, November 29, 2018 - Depart the United States for a trans-Atlantic flight.  Flight will be out of Norfolk, VA or one of the Washington DC Airports (to be determined when the air space can be confirmed). M

DAY 2: Friday, November 30, 2018 - Our Pilgrimage in this Holy Land begins:  After meeting our guide for the Holy Land, we visit Jaffa, where Peter had a vision that led to the first baptism of the Gentiles.  We then head north toward Caesarea, once capital of the Roman province, where we visit the Roman and Crusader remains and the harbor from which St. Paul was taken prisoner to Rome.  We then travel to Netanya on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea for dinner and overnight. D

DAY 3: Saturday, December 1, 2018 - We have come to see for ourselves (John 1:45-46):  We travel to the Jezreel Valley, the historic place of horrible carnage and almost constant strife.  Legend portrays this area as the stage for the final battle of history:  Armageddon (Rev. 16:16).  We visit Mt. Tabor, site of the Transfiguration, where we celebrate Holy Eucharist.  We visit Nazareth Village, a village that brings to life a farm and Galilean village, recreating Nazareth as it was 2,000 years ago.  We continue on to Nazareth, home of the Basilica of the Annunciation, the place where the Angel Gabriel told Mary that she would bear God’s son.  Dinner and overnight Ron Beach Hotel, Tiberias. BD

DAY 4: Sunday, December 2, 2018 - “He is going ahead of us to Galilee” (Mt. 28):  An early morning departure for Caesarea Phillipi (the springs of Banias, Mt. 16:13) where Peter said:  “You are the Messiah, the Christ.”  There will be a walk along the headwaters of the Jordan River where we will renew our Baptismal vows.  From there we continue on to the Mt. of Beatitudes where we listen to a reading of the Sermon on the Mount.  We visit Tabgha, the site of the feeding of the 5000, to view the mosaic of the Loaves and Fishes.  We will visit Capernaum, St. Peter’s House and the Peter Primacy, where Jesus told Peter to “feed my sheep”.  We board a boat reminiscent of the fishing boats used in Jesus’ time and sail across the Sea of Galilee to Tiberias where we will meet our motorcoach.  From there we visit the Kibbutz Museum which houses the 1st century boat discovered in the mud around the sea.  Dinner and overnight Ron Beach Hotel, Tiberias. BD

DAY 5: Monday, December 3, 2018 - From Galilee to the Dead Sea:  We will first travel to Beit Shean (ancient Scythopolis) on our way to Jericho, the oldest human settlement in the world.  From the vantage point of the site in Jericho we have a spectacular view of the “Mt. of Temptation.”  We continue on to Ein Gedi where we will hike to the spectacular oasis/waterfall where David hid from Saul.  Dinner and overnight Ein Gedi Kibbutz, Ein Gedi. BD

DAY 6: Tuesday, December 4, 2018 - Masada, Jordan River, Dead Sea, Valley of the Shadow of Death:  This morning we drive along the Dead Sea to Masada and ride the cable car to the top.  We then travel to Qasr el Yahud, the site of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River as well as the Essene Center at Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.  We will have some time to swim/float in the Dead Sea, known in the Bible as the “Salt Sea” or the “Sea of Arabah” (the high mineral content allows nothing to live in its waters).  On our way to Jerusalem we visit the setting for the parable of the Good Samaritan, and St. George’s Greek Orthodox Monastery, literally carved out of a cliff.  Then it’s on to the Dan Panorama Hotel for dinner and overnight in Jerusalem. BD

DAY 7: Wednesday, December 5, 2018 - Bethlehem and Ein Karem:  After breakfast we visit the Shepherd’s Field, where we will celebrate Holy Eucharist, and the Church of the Nativity, built on the site of Jesus’ birth.  We will stop for shopping in one of the cooperative Christian shops before traveling to the village of Ein Karem to visit the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist and the Church of Visitation, commemorating Mary’s visit to Elizabeth.  We visit the model of Jerusalem at the Israel Museum before returning to Jerusalem for our dinner and overnight at the Dan Panorama Hotel. BLD

DAY 8: Thursday, December 6, 2018 - Jerusalem:  We walk the Via Dolorosa, winding through the busy markets of the Old City and stopping at the Stations of the Cross.  We shall end our walk at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, scene of the Crucifixion and site of the Tomb of Jesus.  We walk together to the Temple Mount Dig to see the excavated stones where Jesus walked, to the Dome of the Rock, to the Western Wailing Wall, and the Jewish Quarter.  From there we go to St. Mark’s Syrian Orthodox Church.  We visit the Scottish Hospice craft store (a consortium of Palestinian women sell their wares and the profits are returned to the women).  Time permitting we will be free to roam the Old City.  Dinner and overnight at the Dan Panorama Hotel, Jerusalem. BD

DAY 9: Friday, December 7, 2018 - Jerusalem:  Today we remember Ascension Day and Palm Sunday as we begin at the site of the Ascension and then down the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane (with visits to the Church of Pater Noster, Dominus Flevit, Church of the Agony and Cave of the Olive Press).  Through St. Stephen’s Gate to the Holy City, we walk to St. Anne’s Church, standing on a property facing the Temple Mount just as it was built by the crusaders.  Once inside we find ourselves singing (the acoustics are glorious).  Nearby, we visit excavations that speak to us of Jesus’ healing at the “pool with the five porticos.”  We visit the enormous cisterns of the Antoinio Fortress and stand on its stone courtyard where Pilate held the trial of Jesus.  We continue on to the possible site of the Upper Room, Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and the House of the High Priest (St. Peter in Gallicantu).  Dinner and overnight Dan Panorama Hotel, Jerusalem. BD

DAY 10: Saturday, December 8, 2018 - Jerusalem and Emmaus:  Depending on the time of our air departure, we may have more free time in the Old City before we visit St. George’s Cathedral (Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East) and then to Abu Ghosh (ancient Emmaus) where we celebrate our own farewell Eucharist in the Crusader Church before our gala farewell dinner in Jaffa before we depart for Ben Gurion Airport.  We bid goodbye to our driver and guide, board our overnight trans-Atlantic flight and journey home with our souls nourished from walking in the footsteps of Jesus and the saints.
