Trip map

DAY 1, Friday, June 10, 2016 - Depart the Little Rock Airport for our flight on Delta Airlines connecting in Atlanta.  There we transfer to our trans-Atlantic Delta Airlines flight into London Heathrow, England. M

DAY 2: Saturday, June 11, 2016 - We arrive in London, England, meet our driver and guide, board our private motorcoach and travel to Canterbury.  We enjoy Evensong at the Canterbury Cathedral prior to our “welcome to England” dinner.  Overnight in Canterbury. D

DAY 3: Sunday, June 12, 2016 - This morning we visit and worship at Canterbury Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Anglican Communion and site of the murder of Thomas a’ Becket.  In the afternoon we visit St. Martin’s (subject to availability) and St. Augustine Abbey which is the burial place of Augustine, England’s first missionary.  We continue to the Canterbury Tales, inside the former St. Margaret’s Church, which provides us with an excellent introduction to the historic Cathedral City and its famous literary connection.  Bringing to life five of Chaucer’s best loved stories with tales of love, romance, jealousy and trickery, vividly re-created with all the fun and excitement of the original tales.  This evening we travel to the coast for a seafood dinner.  Overnight Canterbury. BD

DAY 4: Monday, June 13, 2016 - Today we travel to Chichester stopping at Boxgrove Priory, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Blaise.  The Priory, dating from the early 12th century, is where the villagers of Boxgrove have worshipped in the magnificent building for over 900 years.  We continue to Chichester Cathedral, a good example of an ancient cathedral that has embraced modern art and drama in service to the Gospel.  It is also the most “traditional” diocese in the Church of England.  This visit provides the opportunity to explore contemporary English (Anglican) Catholicism.  We will enjoy Evensong at Chichester Cathedral and then continue our journey to Winchester.  Overnight Winchester. BD

DAY 5: Tuesday, June 14, 2016 - We explore Winchester which was the center of ecclesiastical, commercial and political power until the 13th century.  We visit Winchester Cathedral, the largest medieval church in Europe, with a rich interior, magnificent stalls, and fascinating crypts.  We see the 14th century Pilgrims Hall located next to the Pilgrims School. Pilgrims would start their journey here and finally reach Canterbury at the end of their long walk.  Overnight Winchester. BD

DAY 6: Wednesday, June 15, 2016 - Our journey continues to the ancient circle of stones at Stonehenge which were placed here around 2800 BC and the purpose of which still mystifies historians.  Our journey continues to Old Sarum to see the ruins of the cathedral begun by Bishop Herman and continued by St. Osmund.  The cathedral was consecrated in 1092 and razed in 1331 to provide building materials for the close at Salisbury.  We continue to Salisbury which is dominated by its towering cathedral.  During our tour of Salisbury Cathedral, built between1220-1258, we will see the remarkable lancet windows and sculpted tombs of crusaders and other medieval heroes.  The clock in the north aisle is probably the oldest working mechanism in Europe if not the entire world.  We will also see one of the four original copies of the Magna Carta.  We will tour the Cathedral Close (the grounds of the cathedral) and see High Street Gate.  This evening we will attend Evensong at the Cathedral.  Overnight Salisbury. BD

DAY 7: Thursday, June 16, 2016 - Today we travel through the rolling countryside of southwest England to Bath.  We meet our local guide for a walking tour that will show us the beautiful streets, squares and buildings of this classic English city.  At Bath, built in the Georgian style, and now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we will see the Royal Crescent, the Pump Room, Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey.  In the afternoon we will be free to explore Bath on our own.  A time to enter sites seen on the tour, explore personal preferences, shop or reflect.  We return to Salisbury for dinner and overnight. BD

DAY 8: Friday, June 17, 2016 - After breakfast we travel to St. Alban’s, an ancient town named for Alban, Britain’s first Christian martyr.  The shrine erected where he died became an abbey and later St. Alban’s Cathedral.  The cathedral, founded in the 8th century, is built of bricks taken from a nearby Roman site and, in the 11th century, it was expanded and became the principal Benedictine Abbey in England.  We continue to London for our overnight. B

DAY 9: Saturday, June 18, 2016 - After breakfast we enjoy a guided panoramic sightseeing tour.  We see Buckingham Palace, home of the Queen, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.  We will see Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, which is guarded by the Beefeaters and contains the crown jewels.  We will visit Westminster Abbey, site of the coronations of Britain’s royalty, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, the great Gothic building which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren to replace the medieval cathedral destroyed in the fire of 1666.  The crypt here contains the tombs of Admiral Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.  Overnight London. B

DAY 10: Sunday, June 19, 2016 - This morning we will attend Eucharist (TBD).  The rest of the day we will be free to explore on our own, a time to visit sites, pack, reflect or shop.  This evening we enjoy a “farewell to England” dinner.  Overnight London. BD
