June 4 – 13, 2012

DAY 1, Monday, June 4, 2012 - We Depart the Atlanta Airport on US Airways to Philadelphia.  There, we will transfer to US Airways for our trans-Atlantic flight into Glasgow, Scotland. M

DAY 2: Tuesday, June 5, 2012 - Upon arrival in Glasgow, we meet our guide and transfer to our waiting motor coach.  We begin our journey through Scotland as we travel to Stirling, known as the gateway to the Highlands.  It is here that William Wallace led a battle where the English army was routed in 1297.  We visit Stirling Castle and see Stirling Bridge before we continue to Oban on Scotland’s west coast for dinner and overnight. D

DAY 3: Wednesday, June 6, 2012 - This morning we board a ferry to the Isle of Mull, then by road to Fionnphort where we take the 5 minute ferry to the Isle of Iona, the preeminent historical site for Celtic Christianity.  We step back into the Celtic spiritual history of Scotland.  A monastery was established by St. Columba on Iona in the 6th century and Columba died here on Iona in 597.  Iona is a true “thin space” where, through the ages, pilgrims have sensed the nearness of the Holy.  We visit the Iona Heritage Centre to see how the islanders’ have lived over the past 200 years.  This afternoon we meet at St. Martin’s Cross in front of the Abbey and embark on a Pilgrimage Walk of IonaSt. Martin’s Cross, dating to the 8th century, is the finest of Iona’s Celtic crosses and is decorated on one side with the serpent-and-boss and on the other with Holy figures. Today’s expedition around the island will be challenging.  We will be visiting places of both historic and religious significance.  Dinner and overnight on Iona. BD

DAY 4: Thursday, June 7, 2012 - We say “goodbye” to Iona as we board the ferry to Oban.  Our journey continues along Scotland’s west cast.  We visit the scenic Isle of Skye, recently voted 4th best island in the world by National Geographic magazine.  We enjoy an afternoon tour of the island prior to boarding the ferry to Tarbert in the Outer Hebrides.  We continue to Stornaway, the main town of the Isle of Lewis for dinner and overnight. BLD

DAY 5: Friday, June 8, 2012 - Today a full day will be devoted to the Isle of Lewis focusing on the wealth of Viking history and archaeology, ancient stone circles, natural landscapes and wildlife.  Among the great sites of historic interest to be featured are the Callanish Standing Stones and the Caroloway Broch, an ancient circular fort.  Dinner and overnight Stornaway. BD

DAY 6: Saturday, June 9, 2012 - This morning we depart Isle of Lewis via ferry to Ullapool on Scotland’s north-west coast.  We travel to Loch Ness, over 20 miles long, a mile wide and 700 feet at its deepest, Loch Ness is the largest lake in Scotland by volume and is surrounded with historic attractions and natural wonders.  At the Loch there’s always a chance to catch a glimpse of “Nessie”, the world-famous Loch Ness Monster.  We visit the Loch Ness Visitor Centre and take a boat trip from Urquhart Castle to Inverness for dinner and overnight Inverness. BD

DAY 7: Sunday, June 10, 2012 - An early morning departure today for a visit to the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, the site of the last hand to hand battle fought on British soil.  Part of a wider European religious and political conflict, the short but bloody fight changed the course of history as the ‘Jacobites’ under leadership of Charles Edward Stuart tried and failed to seize control of the British throne.  We visit Elgin Cathedral, one of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval buildings, and the inspiration for many artists.  The cathedral was the ecclesiastical centre and the spiritual heart of the diocese of Moray until the Protestant Reformation of 1560 effectively left the cathedral redundant.  We continue to Aberdeen to visit St. Andrews Cathedral Aberdeen where America’s first bishop, Samuel Seabury, was consecrated in 1784.  We see the key historical associations with Samuel Seabury.  Dinner and overnight Aberdeen. BD

DAY 8: Monday, June 11, 2012 - This morning we depart for Glen Tanar estate situated in a beautiful glen at the heart of Royal Deeside and within the spectacular Cairngorms National Park.  This afternoon we continue to Edinburgh.  Upon arrival we enjoy a walking tour where we visit St. Giles Cathedral, the historic City Church of Edinburgh which is located on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, home to the royal family when they are in Edinburgh.  We explore Edinburgh Castle where the views from the Battlement are breathtaking.  We visit St. Margaret’s Chapel, Queen Mary’s Apartments and the Crown Room.  Dinner and overnight Edinburgh. BD

DAY 9: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 - Today we visit Rosslyn Chapel and continue south to Lindisfarne.  We enjoy a walking tour of the island including the “Old Road”.  Aidan and his monks came from the Irish monastery of Iona, and with the support of King Oswald (based at nearby Bamburgh), worked as missionaries among the pagan English of Northumbria.  In their monastery, they set up the first known school in this area and introduced the arts of reading and writing, the Latin language and the Bible and other Christian books (all in Latin).  They trained boys as practical missionaries who later went out over much of England to spread the Gospel.  Aidan also encouraged women to become nuns and girls to receive education but not in this monastery.  In time, Lindisfarne became known for its skill in Christian art of which the Lindisfarne Gospels are the most beautiful surviving example.  We return to Edinburgh for dinner and overnight. BD

DAY 10: Wednesday, June 13, 2012 - After breakfast in our hotel, we will depart for the Glasgow Airport and board US Airways for our departure to Philadelphia.  There we will transfer to US Airways for our flight into the Atlanta Airport arriving in the evening. BM
