A Pilgrimage to Spain

This pilgrimage is designed for three levels of hiking participation:  Pilgrims who will hike as much as possible of the trail; Pilgrims who will hike shorter portions of the trail; Pilgrims who will not hike the trail.  Those pilgrims who will be hiking all or longer parts of the Camino will need sturdy hiking boots and collapsible poles.  Those who will only be hiking the last hour into Santiago de Compostela will not require boots or poles.

DAY 1: Tuesday, September 16, 2014 - Depart the USA from JFK Airport in New York.  Meals on board flights. M

DAY 2: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 - We arrive in Bilboa, Spain where we meet our guide and driver, board the waiting motorcoach and depart for Roncesvalles where we will check into our hotel for the night.  We will attend the Pilgrim’s Mass at the Collegiata (Collegiate Church) which has been celebrated for almost 1000 years and is one of the most important services on the Camino.  Dinner and overnight Roncesvalles. DAY 3: Thursday, September 18, 2014 - We will begin at 8:00 this morning and drive to St. Jean Pied de Port.  Those who wish to hike the entire 7 to 8 hour trail (25 km) will begin the climb to the Cruz de Thibault.  Those who do not want to hike up to the Cruz de Thibault will have some free time to explore St. Jean Pied de Port on foot and then take taxis to the top of the trail where they will meet the walking group.  Those who wish to hike the downhill portion for the remaining 4 or so hours will join the hikers at the Cruz de Thibault and those who do not wish to walk will return to St. Jean de Pied de Port by taxi.  Later in the afternoon, everyone will join together again in Roncesvalles.  Once everyone meets at Roncesvalles, we will take a quick tour of the city and visit the Roncesvalles Musuem.  Dinner and overnight Roncesvalles. DAY 4: Friday, September 19, 2014 - The walkers will begin at Roncesvalles and walk to Espinal approximately 6.5 km (between 3.5 and 4 miles).  The others will travel by coach from Roncesvalles via Espinal where they meet the walking group and visit the Estelas of Sprinal, an ancient burial ground.  All will then continue by coach to Larrosoana and have a lunch break.  From here you can walk or take the coach to Zabaldika approximately 6.5 km where you will visit San Esteban Church.  Everyone will continue by coach to Pamploma for dinner and overnight. DAY 5: Saturday, September 20, 2014 - Today is a non hiking day for everyone.  We will all take a half day guided walking tour of Pamploma for the entire group which will include the Town Hall, the Plaza Castillo, a taste of the Running of the Bulls route, the Plaza de Toros, the Citadel and Walls, the statue of Hemingway and the Cathedral of Santa Maria.  We will visit the Cathedral of Pamploma, rebuilt in the 17th century and one of the most important and beautiful religious buildings in northern Spain.  King Carlos the III and his wife are buried here.  We will visit the Diocesan Museum where we will see many religious artifacts and also visit the Museum Navarro which houses regional archaeological artifacts and costumes.  Dinner and overnight Pamploma. BD

DAY 6: Sunday, September 21, 2014 - Everyone will begin with an early visit to the San Miguel Church in Cizur Menor.  The church once belonged to the Order of San Juan which is now the Order of Malta.  The walkers will begin just after Cizur Menor and walk to Uterga (11 km or approximately 6 1/3 miles) which includes the Alto de Perdon.  This is an uphill walk followed by a steep downhill walk.  The non walkers will remain on the coach and meet the walkers in Uterga and everyone will drive to Puente la Reina with a short stop at the Eunate Church.  We will have a short visit in Puente la Reina and continue to Estella for lunch and a tour.  We continue by coach to Burgos stopping in Santa Domingo de la Calzada if time permits.  Dinner and overnight in Burgos. DAY 7: Monday, September 22, 2014 - Today is a non hiking day and everyone will drive together to visit the Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery and return to Burgos for a visit to Burgos Cathedral.  We will explore all of Burgos today and have dinner and overnight in Burgos. BD

DAY 8: Tuesday, September 23, 2014 - We will all take the coach to the small village of Hontana and those who wish will then walk to Castrojeriz which is a distance of approximately 10 km which is slightly more than 6 miles.  This is an easy walk for those who wish to try it.  The non walkers will take the coach and the entire group will drive from Castrojeriz to Fromista.  Then we all drive to Leon and visit the Panteon/Basilica of San Isidoro.  Dinner and overnight Leon. BD

DAY 9: Wednesday, September 24, 2014 - We will cover about 250 km (about 155 miles) today.  We begin with the hikers traveling by coach to Fonfria where they will begin their hike to Triacastela a distance of approximately 10 km (approximately 2 ½ hours).  The coach will return and pick up the non walkers and deliver them to Triacastela where they will have some free time and be the welcoming committee for the hikers.  We continue to Cacabelos and the walkers will walk approximately 6 km to Vallafranca del Bierzo.  There will be some free time in Vallafranca del Bierzo for lunch and then then time for a tour of the town.  We will continue by coach to O’Cebreiro, the finest Galician town on the Camino.  Time permitting we will visit the Samos Monastery and then continue by coach to Sarria.  Dinner and overnight in Sarria. DAY 10: Thursday, September 25, 2014 - Today we will again have 3 groups.  The serious hikers will depart at 7:30 am and walk from Sarria via A Pena to Portomarin, a distance of 22.5 km.  Those who wish to walk part of the way will depart with the serious hikers and will meet the coach at A Pena, a distance of approximately 9 km.  The non walkers will leave the hotel later and drive to A Pena where they will pickup group 2 and continue to Portomarin.  There, everyone will await the arrival of the group which has walked the entire route.  The entire group will travel by coach to Mote de Gozo.  From here, everyone is encouraged to take the final walk into Santiago de Compostela which will take about 1 hour.  Dinner and overnight Santiago de Compostela. Day 11: Friday, September 26, 2014 - We will enjoy the morning in Santiago and attend the Pilgrim’s Mass.  In the afternoon, we will drive to Finisterre (Land’s End) where we will celebrate Holy Eucharist.  We will return to Santiago de Compostela for a gala “farewell to Spain” dinner and overnight. Day 12: Saturday, September 27, 2014 - We transfer to the airport and fly to Madrid.  Those who are not taking the extension will continue to the USA arriving back at JFK airport this afternoon. BM

* Price is based on double occupancy without airline taxes and fuel surcharges, which will be added to your final invoice.  Taxes and fuel surcharges are currently $625.80 and may change.  Air transportation available from other cities.  Single supplement:  $599.00.  Land only – Deduct $400 from the price listed above.

* The price is not guaranteed and may change due to the fluctuation of the Euro and the US dollar.  We make every effort to avoid any increase and will only do so if the value of the dollar falls against the Euro.  Your pricing was based on the exchange rate of $1.36 to the Euro.

Tips for the driver and guide are NOT included.

Optional Extension to Madrid


Day 12: Saturday, September 27, 2014 - We transfer to the airport and fly to Madrid where we will be met by another coach and driver and transfer into the heart of Madrid.  We will take an afternoon guided walking tour of Madrid seeing the Royal Palace, the Plaza Espana and Retiro Park.  Dinner and overnight in Madrid. BD

DAY 13: Sunday, September 28, 2014 - Today we visit the Prado Museum and continue our exploration of Madrid.  We will have a gala farewell dinner in a local restaurant this evening which will include typical Madrilenos foods.  Dinner and overnight Madrid. BD

DAY 14: Monday, September 29, 2014 - We will transfer to the Madrid airport for our return to the United States arriving this afternoon at JFK Airport in New York City. BM

Price: $499.00* additional based on a minimum of 10 participants double occupancy.  Single supplement costs $149.00* additional.

The price includes all entrances fees, roundtrip airport transfers, accommodations, tips for meals when meals are included, and hotel taxes.

Tips for the driver and guide are NOT included.
