Trip map

DAY 1:  Wednesday, December 26, 2012 - Depart Jacksonville International Airport for our flight to Newark, NJ where we connect to our nonstop flight into Tel Aviv, Israel. M

DAY 2:  Thursday, December 27, 2012 - We will arrive in Tel Aviv, Israel where we meet our guide and transfer to our waiting motor-coach.  We travel to Herod’s City - Caesarea, once capital of the Roman province.  Here we visit the Roman and Crusader remains and the harbor from which St. Paul was taken prisoner to Rome.  We will visit the fertile valley known as the plain of Megiddo which has been the scene of horrible carnage and almost constant strife.  Legend portrays this area as the stage for the final battle of history: Armageddon (Rev. 16:16).  The excavations at Megiddo have uncovered a fortified city built by Solomon (1 Kgs. 9:15).  We reach Mt. Carmel with its breathtaking view of the Jezreel Valley before we continue to our accommodations on the shores of the Sea of Galilee for dinner and overnight. MLD

DAY 3:  Friday, December 28, 2012 - “He went round the whole of Galilee.” (Mt. 4):  The Sea; Capernaum; Tabgha; Korazin; Mount of Beatitudes and The upper Galilee:  Golan Heights; Caesarea Philippi; Mt. Hermon.  We begin this morning with a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee where you can recall Jesus calming the waters.  We continue to the Mount of Beatitudes to rehear the Sermon on the Mount and then on to Tabgha where we will see the mosaics of the Loaves and Fishes and celebrate Holy Eucharist.  We then visit Capernaum where we shall walk in the ancient synagogue and see St. Peter’s house.  Now we travel to Caesarea Phillipi, once the largest city in northern Israel.  It is here that Jesus said to Simon, “and upon this rock I will build my church” (Mt. 16: 13-20).  Near the foot of Mt. Hermon, we will walk along the Jordan River to the Springs of Banias and renew our baptismal vows.  We will return to the Galilee for dinner and overnight. BLD

DAY 4:  Saturday, December 29, 2012 - This morning we travel to Mt. Tabor, the traditional spot of the Transfiguration.  The Church of the Transfiguration incorporates two chapels; one of Moses and one of Elijah.  We continue to Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus and the location of the Basilica of the Annunciation.  We will return to the Galilee and visit the museum which holds the 1st century boat found in the mud around the Sea of Galilee and then have dinner and overnight at the Sea of Galilee. BLD

DAY 5:  Sunday, December 30, 2012 - Up to Jerusalem:  In the morning we will join an Anglican Parish in the Galilee for Sunday worship followed by lunch with some of the local community.  In the afternoon we will visit Beat Shean, the Bibilical Scythopolis, to visit Israel’s best preserved Roman theater.  We will continue south to Jerusalem where we will find a site on Mt. Zion or the Mount of Olives in order to see the city and orient ourselves.  Dinner and overnight at our guest house in Jerusalem. BLD

DAY 6:  Monday, December 31, 2012 - We begin with a visit to Qumran where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.  We will have time to dip our toes into the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth.  We will visit Ein Gedi where David hid from Saul and have time for a hike to a spectacular oasis/waterfall.  We then travel to Jericho, where we find the remains of the oldest city in the world.  As we return to Jerusalem, we will visit Bethany, home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus and where Jesus often visited.  Then it is on to our guest house for dinner and overnight in Jerusalem. BLD

DAY 7:  Tuesday, January 1, 2013 - The Passion: Pater Noster; Palm Sunday Walk; Dominus Flevit; Church of the Agony; Garden of Gethsemane; Cave of the Olive Press.  We will walk along the Palm Sunday Path stopping to celebrate Eucharist in a private garden that is part of Gethsemane.  From here we shall move on to walk the Via Dolorosa, winding through the busy markets of the Old City. We continue to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, scene of the Crucifixion and site of the Tomb.  We walk together to the Temple Mount Dig, to the Dome of the Rock, to the Western Wailing Wall and the Jewish Quarter.  We will visit the ancient excavated cisterns that were found under the Old City and explore the excavations of the Temple Mount Dig.  After dinner at our guest house in Jerusalem, we visit the Scottish Hospice where a consortium of Arab women sell their handmade wares. BLD

DAY 8:  Wednesday, January 2, 2013 - New City of Jerusalem, Bethlehem:  Today’s sightseeing begins with a visit to Yad Vashem, the Jewish people’s memorial to the six million lives lost to the Holocaust.  Next, we drive past the Knesset, Israel's Parliament en-route to visit the Israel Museum.  Here you will see the fascinating Model of Jerusalem as it was during the time of the Second Temple and the Shrine of the Book, home of the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Then we continue to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherd’ Fields where you can reflect on the birth of Jesus.  We will have a farewell dinner and travel to the airport in Tel Aviv for our return flight departing just before midnight.  We will arrive in Newark early in the morning on January 3, 2013 and then connect to our final flight into Jacksonville.
